As it turns out, the overwhelming defeat she suffered at the hands of the American voter wasn’t the only bad news Hillary got on Tuesday night as South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy, her nemesis won his race and will be returning to serve on House Committees that have had her in the cross-hairs and in the hot seat.
Gowdy, a former U.S. federal prosecutor, has been relentless in his pursuit of the truth in the matter of Mrs. Clinton’s unauthorized use of a secret, private email server during her tenure as President Obama’s first secretary of state and has also been sharply critical of FBI Director James Comey’s investigation into the case.
Following Comey’s decision not to recommend charges against Clinton, Gowdy subjected the director to a blistering cross-examination before the Oversight Committee, forcing him to acknowledge the numerous instances when she lied to the Committee – and to the American public.
Gowdy also took exception to Comey’s announcement – coming just days before the election – to reaffirm that decision.
“There is sufficient evidence, both direct and circumstantial, upon which a jury could conclude an intent to violate the law. This evidence includes concealment of evidence, destruction of evidence and false exculpatory statements — all of which fall under the general heading of consciousness of guilt.”
Gowdy’s statement and his return to the House cannot be reassuring news for Clinton who repeatedly claimed, in the final days of the campaign, that she had been “cleared” by the FBI – twice.
In fact, Gowdy said Comey’s most recent announcement reaffirms the original July finding that Clinton was “extremely careless in her handling of classified material,” leaving open the possibility that her troubles before the Oversight Committee did not come to an end on Election Day.
There is one scenario that might prevent Gowdy from heading up the effort to make Clinton accountable for her decision to bypass the rules and violate federal statute, as the Boston Herald and other news sources have speculated that he may be tapped by incoming President Trump to replace Loretta Lynch as Attorney General and head of the Department of Justice.
If that occurs, Hillary may have real reason to worry.
